Dig Dig Dig

Tuesday April 3rd 2012

When Allen picked us up from Heathrow, on the drive home, we were talking about ideas of things to do in London. Allen suggested Diggerland. We had never heard of it before. Allen explained it is a place where they have all different JCB's (diggers) that you can ride and drive - even kids can ride and drive them depending on their height. That was it the 3 male Oxlad's were left salivating and Diggerland was added to our must do list.

Today was finally the day we had chosen to head to Diggerland in Kent. when we arrived we had to watch a brief safety video before we could begin the rides.

Diggerland was amazing. Connor was tall enough to go all of the rides, while Ryan was only too short for one. Connor was in the Giant Digger digging a crater before we knew it. Ryan and David were right behind him.

After the digger it was time to move on to some driving activities. First Connor drove a dumper truck on his own while Ryan had help from David. Next each of the boys drove their own bob cat around a dirt circuit. For the third driving challenge in a row Connor went on the Go Karts and Ryan and I went for a drive in a tractor.

Connor also drove the biggest JCB on his own while Ryan and I went on the ground shuttle which bounces you up and down - this was to become Ryan's favourite with him going on it 10 times. The 3 of us also went for a ride in a 4WD before everyone went to watch the stunt show.

After the stunt show Connor found his way onto another digger while Ryan went on the Dig-A-Round - a carousel made from what else, a digger. Connor also had a turn on the carousel. They seemed to really enjoy all the rides and were quickly running from one to another. Luckily, although there were quite a few people around, they never had to queue for more than a few minutes.

Both boys also drove diggers where they had to knock down skittles, dig for treasure and rescue ducks. The duck rescue turned competitive with the boys racing to see if they could get their 3 ducks out before David, Allen or myself.

After lunch, a soft serve and the two boys being hoisted 50 feet up into the air by another digger, David and I took our lives in our hands by going as passengers in a Mitsubishi 4WD driven by Connor. That's right driven by Connor. This is called Minor Madness and you can see why. Connor had to put it into drive, release the hand brake, accelerate and brake and steer the car himself around a dirt circuit with an instructor sitting beside him. He did a fantastic job!!!

In a day that seemed to just keep going the boys and David also went on the Dodgem cars before repeating some of the rides/drives.

We all decided though that Connor took the prize as the most adventurous (read nuts) when he chose to go on the Spin Dizzy.
This is where you sit in the bucket of a large JCB and are spun around and around, changing directions and getting higher and faster each time. Truly crazy!!!

Well the verdict is in on Diggerland - a smash hit with everyone wishing they could have stayed longer or come again, including the adults. Connor managed to do every single activity on offer but was still keen for more. It was a lot of fun!!!!

  1. Unbelievable. What a great place. Guess who is going to be the bobcat expert if you need to do any more digging at home. The boys faces (and David and yours) says it all.
