Today was going to be a busy day. Our first chance to send the day with Maggie and Allen. First we headed off to Morrison's supermarket, because anyone who knows Maggie knows that you can't go on any outing without supplies - chocolate, biscuits, chips etc. The boys enjoyed getting to fill a tub with chocolate and lollies before we all went and had a cooked breakfast and then hit the road.
Our first destination for the day was Mountfitchet Castle. This is an open air museum where you can experience life in a medieval Norman Motte and Bailey castle. The castle has been recreated on its original site. The boys had fun feeding the goats, deer and chickens. We also walked around and looked at all of the houses and work areas and tried out things like the stocks and the armour.
Once we had finished in the castle area we went to the Toy Museum that was also on site. There were fascinating things to see including putting Mum in the guillotine. At the end of theToy Museum the boys had collected all of the stamps they needed to in their Mountfitchet Passports and so were able to collect a prize. We also stopped briefly for lunch.
After lunch we drove to see the world's oldest wooden church. It was simple but beautiful and amazing to think it has survived all this time. Just outside its doors it even has a soldier from the Crusades buried there.
Our final stop for the day was the British government's decommissioned secret nuclear bunker. We weren't quite sure what to expect but it was fantastic. We were able to take an audio guided tour throughout the many floors of the bunker. It was fascinating. David was very keen to hear about and see the air-conditioning system. The boys liked trying on some of the protective clothing.
Connor bought himself a couple of souvenirs. A compass and a bullet keyring. We had time for a few minutes play on an outdoor playground before the weather deteriorated and we headed to a 17th century pub for dinner on the way home. A very busy but lovely day.
