After our buffet breakfast we decided to quickly walk to Hallgrimskirkja or Hallgrimur's Church in central Reykjevik. The exterior of the church is based upon the formations caused when lava hits the ocean just like those we had seen at the black beach.
Once the church opened we could see inside and then take the lift up to the 8th floor. This brought us out at the level of the clock. This high up the wind was howling. We climbed up a set of interior stairs to a higher viewing area. The views of Reyjkevik were amazing but it was freezing cold and we were getting blown around so we didn't stay here too long.
Back at our hotel we waited for our transfer to the airport via a stop at the Blue Lagoon - an outdoor geothermal pool which is also now a resort and spa run by one of the power companies. Having already been swimming at a local pool we were now experts in all procedures required before entering the pool. Again, the dash from the change rooms to the pool had to be brisk as it was freezing and blowing a gale.
Despite nearly getting blown right out of the water at times and there being white caps, we had a lot of fun swimming around to different parts of the pool as the temperature varied widely. We all also stood under the waterfall, had a steam bath and a sauna and the boys loved playing underneath one of the bridges.
When at the Blue Lagoon there is no escaping trying the special mineral mud as a facial to improve your skin - we were warned though not to get it in our hair unless we wanted it to turn to straw.
The water was so warm and this was a great way to have a lot of fun and relax before our flight to the UK. All too soon it was time to get out, get changed and catch the bus to the airport. Thankfully, we were being met by Allen at Heathrow. Once we got to Maggie and Allen's house there was time for a quick snack, to plan my route for my work course tomorrow and a long catch up chat before heading to bed.
