London By Eye And By Duck

Sunday April 1st 2012

Today was another day where supplies were needed. We were going up to Central London for more exploration. Unfortunately the Victoria Line on the tube was not working so we planned to catch the above ground train. After arriving at the station we found it also wasn't running and we would have to catch a bus. Needless to say this takes a lot longer and we were worried we wouldn't make it in time for our London Eye trip.

When we eventually arrived David went and collected the tickets and we joined the queue and waited for Maggie and Allen. Given the size of the queue there was no way we would make our time slot at 12.30pm and also be finished in time for our next activity. David very cleverly went to ask if we could pay extra to upgrade our tickets to fast track explaining that we had "an older person" in our group who had bad knees and couldn't stand or walk properly. The lady he spoke to then came and got us out of the queue and took us to the fast track lane. We then managed to get on within minutes.

For some reason there was one orange pod on the London Eye. Ryan was hoping that we would get that one and as luck would have it we did. We enjoyed our time high above London looking at the sights.

When we finished our ride we went for a walk along Embankment and watched many of the street performers. The boys enjoyed posing with a gold magician and battling Darth Vader.

We took the time to also indulge in some of our supplies before heading to the pick up spot for our D-Day Duck - a WWII Duck Boat tour around London focussing on WWII and the London Blitz.  Our duck was called Rosalind.

This was lots of fun and very interesting as we were driven around London and shown important places from the war. We were also shown photos from the war, listened to music and news broadcasts from the time, held ammunition and were shown weekly rations. When the land part of the trip was completed our amphibious vehicle turned into a boat and we entered the Thames right beside MI-6 Headquarters.

As we entered the Thames even though the tide was low those of us on the left hand side of the boat (Connor, David, Allen and I) got very wet. It was fun cruising up the Thames and seeing London from a different perspective as we learnt more about the Blitz.

When we finished our D-Day Duck we returned to the London Eye (after soft serve ice cream of course) and did the 4D experience. This was a short film about the London Eye where you saw things in 3D and also got wet. When we were done we caught the train out of Central London and stopped at the Waltham Oak for dinner before finishing off at home with Ben and Jerry's.
