Finding Our Way To Market Shopping

Tuesday March 13th 2012

We had a quiet start to the day today. In the afternoon we decided to try to find our way to the Stanley Markets. Our first mission was to catch the Star Ferry across the Victoria Harbour from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island. We were pleased to see that we could use our MTR Octopus Cards to pay and everything was clearly sign posted, so it was really easy.

Once on Hong Kong Island we walked to the Central Bus Station and boarded double decker bus 6X to Stanley Prison (the driver assured us that it would take us to the Stanley Markets). Connor was a bit worried that we had gotten on the wrong bus insisting we should have caught the 260 Express. Throughout the journey he kept announcing that we had got it wrong. The bus ride itself was very interesting. We got to see the playground areas of the more affluent Hong Kong citizens such as the Hong Kong Country Club and the Repulse Bay and beach areas.

At the Stanley Markets we wandered around the brightly coloured narrow alley ways full of traders and stalls. There were many different things to buy including clothing, electronics, leather goods, art works, carvings, toys and souvenirs. Connor was so excited to get an electronic helicopter that can fly upside down. After much debating and walking up and down the stalls we bought two paintings.

With the shopping spree over we headed back to Hong Kong on the bus and then made our way back to the ferry terminal. As we had run out of credit on our Octopus Cards we needed to work out how to use the token system. Finding the token machine was easy but it took a 10 year old to work out how to get it to accept our coins. Thank God we brought him with us or we may still be there now.

We finished off the day with Dim Sum dinner - a clear favourite of the boys - and then enjoyed the laser light display from our room while we savoured our Ben and Jerry's ice cream.
